Project Details
The Goodwin Run at Padonia Road stream restoration project in Baltimore County, MD included several innovative and interesting components. CRI conducted the environmental services portion of this stream restoration design project.
The primary focus of the project was to restore a stable, natural channel at two design points - an undersized driveway crossing in need of replacement and a concrete-lined trapezoidal channel. The driveway replacement was complicated by its location where the stream made a rapid change in stream classification and gradient. The stream is classified as a Class III trout stream requiring the design to facilitate fish passage.
The design consisted of step-pools under a new crossing and stabilization of the upstream and downstream channels using natural design techniques. The size of the new opening was dictated by evaluation of stable geomorphic characteristics in the upstream reach.
The trapezoidal channel downstream was designated for removal and CRI designed a steep series of cascading steps, riffles and pools. We based the design on an extensive geomorphic assessment of a stable reference reach upstream of the concrete-lined portion of the channel. We developed a series of geomorphic relationships that provided valuable reference information for design of the new channel. Examples of the geomorphic relationships were pool and step, spacing, width, depth, length and particle size. The presence of large cobbles and boulders in the reference reach illustrated its importance for frequent grade control and aesthetics. Contacts were made early in to ensure that the size, type and color of the existing rock in the reference channel could be emulated. Fortunately, the County DPW had a road project planned nearby that would serve as the source for the desired rock.
CRI provided other services including delineation of jurisdictional wetlands, permit coordination, landscape plan for restoration of areas disturbed by construction, and plans, specification and details for the stream restoration and in-channel structures.
