Water Resources Engineering for Watershed Management

Coastal Resources, Inc. (CRI) is providing natural resource assessments, stream restoration design, and permitting services as a subconsultant in support of stormwater retrofit and stream restoration projects on this 5-year open-end watershed improvement contract.  To date, CRI is working on the following task orders under this contract:

Stormwater Retrofit Projects:  CRI is provided Natural Resource Inventories (NRIs), tree survey, and forest conservation permitting in support of the design for 4 stormwater retrofit projects in the Potomac drainage.  CRI conducted wetland delineations in accordance with the Piedmont Supplement to the 1987 USACE wetland delineation manual, identified and assessed forested areas for species composition, and overall health, and surveyed trees 6 inches diameter at breast height (dbh) and greater on Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) property and 24 inch dbh and greater on non-M-NCPPC properties for all 4 project areas.   CRI prepared an NRI/FSD for each of the projects detailing forest characteristics, large trees, wetlands, streams, floodplains, steep slopes, and other natural resources.  Once project area limits were finalized, CRI submitted the NRI/FSD, and responded to M-NCPPC comments.  After NRI/FSD approval, CRI anticipates that 2 of the 4 projects will require preparation of a Forest Conservation Plan.

Gunners Branch Stream Restoration:  CRI provided geomorphic assessments, NRIs, tree survey, and forest conservation permitting in support of the design of a stream restoration project along Gunners Branch in the Great Seneca Creek watershed.  CRI conducted a Rosgen Level III assessment of two forks of Gunners Branch and conducted wetland delineations in accordance with the Piedmont Supplement to the 1987 USACE wetland delineation manual.  Forested areas were identified and assessed for species composition, and overall health, and trees 6 inches dbh and greater on M-NCPPC property and 24 inch dbh and greater on non-M-NCPPC properties were surveyed.  CRI prepared an NRI/FSD for submittal to MNCPPC as well as an FCP once the FSD was approved.

Low-Impact Development (LID) Projects:   CRI provided NRIs, tree survey, and forest conservation permitting in support of the design of three LID projects that aim to treat currently untreated impervious areas.  CRI conducted wetland delineations in accordance with the Piedmont Supplement to the 1987 USACE wetland delineation manual, identified and assessed forested areas for species composition, and overall health, and surveyed trees 6 inches dbh and greater on M-NCPPC property and 24 inch dbh and greater on non-M-NCPPC properties for all three project areas. An FCP was also prepared and submitted once the NRI/FSDs were approved as necessary for each project.

Old Farm Creek Stream Restoration:  CRI provided geomorphic assessments, NRIs, tree survey, forest conservation permitting, and post-construction monitoring in support of the design of a stream restoration project along Old Farm Creek in the Cabin John watershed.  CRI conducted a Rosgen Level III assessment and performed wetland delineations in accordance with the Piedmont Supplement to the 1987 USACE wetland delineation manual.  Forested areas were identified and assessed for species composition, and overall health, and trees 6 inches dbh and greater on M-NCPPC property and 24 inch dbh and greater on non-M-NCPPC properties will be surveyed.  CRI prepared an NRI/FSD for submittal to M-NCPPC as well as an FCP once the FSD was approved.
